EWM Structure
When implementing the EWM, look at the physical warehouse structure of warehouse complex.
Define the individual physical area in the warehouse, such as general storage area, Bulk storage area, High-Rack area etc. as storage area. Storage section if applicable but not mandatory. Storage bin to manage the stock for all products.
Below figure illustrate the warehouse structural elements.
Warehouse Number:
- Define Warehouse Number
- The warehouse number represents the highest organizational level, encompassing either a complex of multiple physical storage facilities or a single warehouse.
- It is advisable to define a single warehouse for a building or a group of storage facilities located in the same geographical area.
- Within warehouse products are stored on quantity and not value basis.
- Assign Warehouse Number
- The Supply Chain Unit (master data) must be assigned to the warehouse number, which is a one-time activity.
- The Owner and Party Entitled to Dispose (Business Partner - Master data) can be set as the default, which is advisable when only one Plant is assigned to a warehouse number.
- Define warehouse control parameter
- Define basic parameter such as weight, volume, length, time, currency, factory calendar etc
A storage type refers to a designated space or area within a storage facility, which can be a physical or logical subdivision of a warehouse complex. The specific characteristics of the storage type can be customized according to business requirements.
These are the commonly used storage type in EWM
- General Storage
- Fixed Bin Storage
- High-Rack Storage
- Bulk Storage
- Pallet Storage
Storage Type Groups
Different storage types within a warehouse can be grouped together for use in stock removal or putaway search sequences, rather than assigning each storage type individually.
- A storage section is a division within a storage type that groups together storage bins sharing similar characteristics for the purpose of putaway.
- The storage section is optional and becomes mandatory only when the 'Storage Section Check' is enabled in the storage type configuration.
- If you manually specify the storage section or bin, the system will verify if a putaway is permissible.
Storage Bin:
The storage bin represents the smallest organization unit within a warehouse
Since a storage bin denotes a specific physical location in a warehouse, it can be identified by coordinates such as Aisle, Stack, and Level.
You can define the bin structure for mass creation or manual entry by using an Excel template or by creating it manually.
You can define below attributes to bins
Maximum weight, volume, capacity
Bin type - to group together similar bins such small, large, extra large
Bin access - is useful to determine the WO to resource
Additional elements in the warehouse
Activity Area:
- An activity area is logical grouping of bins to perform the certain activity such Picking, Putaway, Counting etc.
- You need to define activity and assign to activity area.
- Assign bins to activity area 1. Implicit (assign only storage type) 2. Explicit (Assign storage type and Aiel, Stack and Level) etc.
- Define the sort sequence of storage bin for activity area. Bin sorting generate the sorting withing activity area for each activity such PICK, INVE, PTWY etc.
Work Center:
Work center is physical unit in a warehouse where specific activities, such as packing, counting, Deconsolidation, Quality inspection etc. are performed.
Each work center must be assigned to a warehouse number, storage type, and bin.
The storage type below is used to define a work center.
-
Work Center (E)
-
Pick Point (B)
-
Work Center in Staging Area Group (I)
-
Identification and Pick Point (C)
Staging Area:
It is interim storage location to stage the material in the warehouse. They are location very close to Door.
You can define staging area for different purposes such as Inbound - staging area for goods receipt or Outbound - staging area for goods issue or both
A Staging area created under a storage type that is assigned the role D.
Door:
A door in a warehouse is the designated point where goods are received or dispatched.
A door bin created under a storage type that is assigned the role F.
